TL:DR

The Sugar Skull bottle celebrates Día de los Muertos—a holiday that reminds us love and memory never fade. Inspired by our team’s own heritage, it’s a heartfelt tribute to culture, connection, and tradition.

To give back to the community that helped inspire the design, Owala donated to SAY Sí, an organization developing the arts and supporting youth in Latino and other marginalized communities. Explore their work.

We're Throwing Ourselves A Beach Party. You’re Invited.

After a few years of epic Birthday Bashes—from retro flashbacks to black tie parties—we felt like doing something a little more laidback. A vacation was in the cards.

So we set out to design a birthday-worthy collection that felt like a celebration (obvi), worked well together, and were unmistakably Owala.

Our design team loved the idea of sunshine. Warmth. That instant mood lift you get when you think about the beach, even if you’re nowhere near it.

“Each bottle has to look good by itself, but also as a whole,” one designer explained. “You can do all that work and still have it not make the cut if the color harmony’s off.”

Instead of designing one hero bottle, the team designed a whole sunkissed world: vintage surf culture, ocean textures, tropical fruit, vacation sports, and coastal nostalgia—that all lived together under one Birthday Bash umbrella. But while each one fits the beachy vibe, they’re absolutely unique—which means there’s a bottle for everyone’s style.

The Creative Constraints: The Rules That Held It All Together

With seven bottles and multiple designers involved, cohesion didn’t just happen by accident. Our designers came up with a few ground rules to make things feel intentional:

  • Every bottle had to stand on its own and look good together
  • Be beachy, but not cheesy—no souvenir shop energy
  • Each design needed a clear “person” in mind

Color became the biggest challenge. With several different designs in progress at once, even small tweaks to one bottle could throw off the balance of the whole collection.

“Each bottle has to look good by itself, but also as a whole,” one designer explained. “You can do all that work and still have it not make the cut if the color harmony’s off.”

There were constant check-ins, shared feedback loops, and plenty of back-and-forth to make sure no single bottle felt out of place. Planning a beach getaway isn’t as easy as just showing up.

Meet the Collection (At a Glance)

Before getting into the details, say hi to the Birthday squad:

  • Rolling In: It has ocean waves you can almost hear if you lean in close.
  • Coral Cabana: It’s tonal, fun, and quietly beachy.
  • Just Ripe: With fresh, tropical fruit that’ll have your mouth watering.
  • Coastal Bohemian: Intricate, layered, and full of hidden details.
  • Vintage Surf: An ode to nostalgic surf culture with a more masculine edge.
  • Vacation Mode: It’s social, sporty, and its bright colors are a ray of sunshine.
  • Go Halvsies: Bold, graphic, and built for sharing the spotlight.

Each one is different, but they’re all part of the same story.

The Bottles, Grouped by Story

Rather than treating each bottle as a complete standalone, the team naturally gravitated toward mini-stories within the collection.

Three beach-themed bottles displayed in a collage layout: a pink patterned tumbler labeled “Coastal Bohemian,” a cream handled mug with blue shell illustrations labeled “Coral Cabana,” and a teal gradient bottle labeled “Rolling In,” set against sand, seashells, and soft blue backdrops.

The Ocean & Coastals

Rolling In · Coral Cabana · Coastal Bohemian

These designs are rooted in texture, tone, and detail.

Rolling In started with a special finish sample that gave us a great idea. Because the texture reminded the team of resin ocean art—layered, fluid, and alive—the goal became making the entire bottle feel like the ocean, right down to the lid.

“We wanted the lid to feel like a continuation of the sand,” one designer said. “Like the whole bottle is the ocean.”

That lid took serious experimentation (and we mean serious), including fully deconstructing an existing Holiday Magic lid, Frankensteining pieces together, and sending a one-off version to the factory to replicate.

Coral Cabana went the opposite direction, with something softer, quieter, more understated. Early versions were brighter and bolder, but it wasn’t working like we wanted. The team kept refining until it felt elevated.

“It was all about harmony — stripe thickness, coral size, color balance,” the designer explained. “Even the smallest change completely shifts the vibe.”

Coastal Bohemian is the detail lover’s bottle. Built from an early base pattern, the final version was carefully layered with interlocking elements (water droplets, waves, leaves) designed so that the closer you look, the more you find.

“The goal was for things to feel hidden,” the designer shared. “Nothing should stand out too much — it should all feel balanced and cohesive.”

The Playful & Punchy

Just Ripe

This bottle brings the fun (and the food).

Just Ripe went through extensive testing around scale and spacing—how big the fruit should be, how spread out, and which fruits actually felt right.

“We weren’t doing average fruit,” one designer said. “You’ve gotta throw in a papaya.”

The goal was tropical and textured, without getting weird or cartoonish. So we loved how it turned out in the end.

Two beach-themed insulated bottles displayed side by side in framed layouts. Left: a blue and beige patterned bottle labeled “Vintage Surf” standing on sand with driftwood and glass decor. Right: a green bottle with a pink vertical stripe labeled “Vacation Mode,” set against a soft blue backdrop with white pickleball balls.

The Lifestyle Bottles

Vintage Surf · Vacation Mode

These were designed for people on the move.

Vintage Surf was intentionally more male-leaning, which came with its own challenges. The team wanted a patterned bottle that still felt instantly iconic, but not loud or novelty driven.

“Men’s bottles can get boring,” the designer admitted. “We wanted this to still have personality.”

The blue and tan palette, inspired by surf shops and beach nostalgia, checked all the boxes.

Vacation Mode was built around being outside and being social. Whether you’re playing pickleball, tennis, or golf in the sunshine with friends, it’s made to keep you hydrated throughout.

The Wildcard: Go Halvsies

Every collection needs one bottle that breaks the pattern just enough to keep things interesting. That was Go Halvsies. While it’s playful and punchy—it’s also a little wild in the best way.

This design started with characters—and with a dad who wanted to make something he could share with his son, but that was also elevated enough for adults. Instead of beginning with colors or patterns, he started with creatures—and punny illustrations. That’s how characters like King Crab (a crab in a crown) and Flying Fish (yes, a fish with wings) came to life. Each one is a little weird, a little unexpected, and intentionally open to interpretation.

The goal was simple: create something that’s genuinely fun to look at for both adults and kids (and we’d say it succeeded).

The illustrations lean into the funkier side of Owala—one of our favorite sides, honestly. It’s the kind of bottle that rewards curiosity. You notice something new every time you pick it up. A creature you missed before. A face you suddenly decide is your favorite.

Like many other bottles, balance was a toughie. Too many creatures and the bottle felt super chaotic. Too few and it lost its wacky energy. The final layout gives each character room to exist, while still feeling full of movement and life.

Go Halvsies is meant to be a conversation starter. The one that makes someone say, “Wait—what is that?” and then look closer. It’s here to have fun—and to remind you that sometimes the best ideas come from love and a little imagination.

Designer Favorites & Easter Eggs

A few behind-the-scenes details we’re really proud of:

  • Coral Cabana originally had a larger coral piece covering the entire bottle until the team pulled it back to feel more dainty and feminine.
  • Coastal Bohemian once had mermaids (obviously, they didn’t make the final cut).
  • Rolling In’s lid is the result of literal physical deconstruction and reconstruction of other bottles made in the office and sent to our factory to replicate.
  • If you look closely at Go Halvsies, you’ll notice each of the creatures connect to a punny name - king crab, flying fish, etc. Each creature was inspired by the names of real sea animals, but represented in a funky (very Owala) way.
Collage of four beach-inspired bottle designs: a pink bottle with subtle floral pattern, a teal gradient bottle with cream lid standing on sand, a navy bottle with colorful sea creature illustrations, and a close-up of a cream bottle with blue shell and coral motifs.

From Sketch to Shelf

Across the collection, the biggest part wasn’t really the concept—it was all about refinement.

“You can give a crappy first-draft version to show the idea,” one designer said, “but then we take that concept and make it Owala.”

That meant adjusting line weights, softening curves, refining textures, and constantly asking: does this feel epic enough for Birthday Bash?

Everything here was planned to a T and pushed until it felt just right.

How Birthday Bash Fits Into the Bigger Picture

Birthday Bash has become one of our favorite traditions. It’s a yearly moment where the brand gets to go a little bigger, a little bolder, and a little more playful than usual.

Because it’s our birthday… and we can do what we want.

This collection sums up what Birthday Bash is all about: an immersive experience rooted in so much joy. It’s a celebration—not just of another year, but of the creativity behind the scenes.
